1. Why did you choose this lesson? Brief summary of original lesson plan design/goals of lesson.
· The lesson was detailed and explicit
· A number of technology strategies seemed perfect for this lesson
· Science and technology generally go hand in hand

This lesson was originally presented on the Rhode Island Department of Education website. It was presented as a writing lesson as indicated by the GLEs/GSEs. The original objectives for this lesson plan were to have students be able to write a specific and organized procedure, follow and evaluate a written procedure and identify the important factors that are necessary for writing an accurate procedure.

2. Define new lesson plan design/goals of lesson.

· Modified the lesson to incorporate a technology demonstration
· Used tasks that engage students in hands-on technology activities
· Differentiated the instruction via application of different types of tools to address all learning styles

The modified design of the lesson plan included integrating and applying technology while maintaining the ultimate goal of having students learn and master the skills needed to write a procedure. We felt that incorporating technology for this particular lesson would help to deepen the understanding of the details needed to write the scientific procedure. Students would be required to employ their previous knowledge from other technology based lessons in order to complete the assignment. The target students are 10th graders and hopefully at this point in their education they are proficient in computer skills so the technology used here will just enhance these skills. Additionally, the modifications allow for this lesson to be even more student centered as well as provide differentiated instruction for our diverse learners.

3. Which tool or tools did you choose to incorporate into this lesson to potentially improve it?

· Wiki or Blog
· Podcast
· YouTube video
· Movie Maker

We chose to include a blog/wiki option, a podcast option, a YouTube and Movie Maker option. We believed that these tools were very mainstream in a student’s world and that they have been exposed to the use of these tools both inside and outside of the classroom. The selections were aimed to improve the lesson by adding dimension, depth and an element
of creativity.

4. Why did you choose this tool?

· Adaptability to all learning styles
· Variety
· Enhances conceptual learning and cognitive thinking

The use of these tools allows the teacher to have varied materials within the lesson and to present one lesson that addresses multiple learning styles. A wiki/blog will allow those students whose strengths lie in writing & reading to showcase their ability. A student whom is more technology savvy could choose to showcase this skill by making a movie on YouTube or Movie Maker. The auditory learner will thrive in creating a podcast.

5. What standards were you using to guide your decision on this? NETS?
NETS-T, 2a
NETS-S, 2b
The NETS teacher standard addressed in the lesson is 2a. This standard states 2. teachers design, develop and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS-S teachers: a. develop technology-enriched learning environments the enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress.
The NETS student standard addressed in the lesson is 2b. This standard states 2. Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. Students: b communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats.

6. Do you feel this will improve your teaching? If so, why?
This will improve the teaching by incorporating tools that support and encourage higher level thinking in today’s techno savvy students. The ability to deliver differentiated instruction, richer, more authentic, lessons in order to gain deeper understanding of content is possible for teachers through all of the available tools.

7. Do you feel this will help improve student learning? If so, how and why?

Student learning will be enhanced because the use of technology is a great way for students to showcase their strengths by choosing a medium that will deliver the information they are to be assessed on that showcases their best work. Students learn in a variety of styles. Good teachers will provide differentiated lessons for all types of learners. Providing this flexibility and variety increases motivation and engagement for students.
